Abstract

Cytohistological evaluation of bone marrow, through joint analysis of biopsy and bone marrow aspirate, is used for the diagnosis of various diseases and hematological conditions, including the staging of hematological neoplasms, such as lymphomas. There is also a third material for analysis, the bone marrow clot, which is obtained after the blood resulting from the aspirate has clotted. Although little studied and used in medical practice, such material is complementary to bone biopsy and can contribute information for diagnosis. Due to the scarcity of data related to the bone marrow clot technique, its precise role in bone marrow evaluation, especially in the staging of lymphomas, is unknown. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between the bone marrow clot technique and bone marrow biopsy to detect bone marrow infiltration by indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) and verify its clinical applicability at the time of staging. Patients with a confirmed diagnosis of indolent NHL at the Hematology Service of the Botucatu Medical School, who present bone marrow infiltration during staging and for whom myelogram and histological material from diagnostic aspirate and biopsy are available will be included. Patients will be evaluated for the presence of infiltration diagnosed by the clot, biopsy, or both. This analysis will be carried out using the Chi-square test. The correlation between infiltration diagnosed by the clot and biopsy will be assessed using the Pearson or Spearman tests.
