Abstract

This research Project for the research internship abroad program (BEPE) is based on the master's research titled Shared Tastes: The Pisa Griffin and the Circulation of Islamic Motifs in the Medieval Mediterranean (FAPESP 2023/12048-0), developed in the Postgraduate Program in Art History at the Federal University of São Paulo, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Flavia Galli Tatsch, and linked to the Thematic Project A Connected History of the Middle Ages. Communication and Circulation from the Mediterranean (FAPESP 2021/02912-3). The main objective of this research internship abroad is to conduct a technical visit to the Pisa Griffin, the central object of the main research, at the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo and Pisa Cathedral, where it has remained since its arrival in Italy. Additionally, the visit intends to explore the Lucca Falcon, currently located at the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Lucca and Massa Carrara, and the Church of San Frediano, for on-site analysis of both objects. Moreover, the project aims to access bibliographic documents that aid in investigating these objects, focusing on their reuse and presence in the communes of Pisa and Lucca in the Medieval Mediterranean region, with an emphasis on conflicts and military endeavors, to map transcultural relationships through spolia. Therefore, the structure and collection of institutions like the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, among others detailed in the schedule, will be essential. Access to the described visual and bibliographic sources will significantly contribute to the development and final writing of the master's thesis.
