Abstract

Intangible assets, such as geographical indications (GIs), have the potential to attribute value to a quality, creating an intangible asset. Additionally, they serve to identify the link between products or services and their territory, promote the quality, reputation, and authenticity associated with these products and services, and protect the interests of producers and consumers. This research replicates the methodology of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to estimate, among other things, the costs and benefits for rural producers who are part of recognized GIs, helping future stakeholders make informed decisions based on detailed data that reflect the complex reality and particularities of Brazil. The main expected outcome is the development of public policy for the implementation of the National Intellectual Property Strategy, enacted by Decree 10.886/2021, with legislative and regulatory suggestions, as well as the production of technical data that will enable the creation of effective standards, policies, and practices for territorial promotion through the encouragement of geographical indications and collective trademarks. These efforts aim to structure partnerships between universities, government bodies, schools, private entities, associations, cooperatives, and others (AU).
