Abstract

This project aims to apply for a research internship grant abroad (BEPE) to be carried out at Université Paris Cité. The main objective of the ongoing master's research project, of which this particular project is a part, is to outline the formal foundations of a love beyond narcissism. To this end, we will particularly draw on the contributions of Alain Badiou and Jacques Lacan. The specific objective of this branch of the main project is to investigate how Badiou's concept of fidelity, divided into state/spontaneous fidelity, dogmatic fidelity, and generic fidelity, can operationalize a connection to a love event in the subject that allows for a break with the symbolic and imaginary references that sustain both the subject and their love partner within the field of idealization. This field, introduced by Freud and deepened by Lacan, pertains to the relationships between the ego ideal and the ideal of the ego and their impacts on the field of narcissism. Fidelity is the condition that makes an event possible; that is, it is only by establishing a relationship of fidelity with an event that one can gather the effects of this event, namely, its naming, its defense by the subject, and the investigation into the impact this event will have on the pre-established knowledge network of the subject. We are interested in considering (i) how the love encounter can break away from the field of repetition and reinscription of the ideal references already marked in the speaking subject, and (ii) how, by sustaining the contingency of the love encounter, it is possible to produce a relationship of fidelity with this event. At the same time, this same investigation will allow us to make (iii) the transposition to analytic love, that is, how this love is sustained beyond the frameworks of idealization. In other words, how it is possible to formalize, based on Badiou's contributions, a relationship of fidelity to what emerges from a sustained relationship with the paradoxical object a, an object that occupies the position of semblance in the analytic discourse, marking the position of the analyst. This discourse, far from behaving as a reference to ideals-the foundation of narcissistic love-offers the particularity of the object small a, an object that resists the unifying attempts of ideals.
