Abstract

This project seeks to understand how the State promotes its national interests during the Olympics and whether this promotion is aligned with the Olympic movement, especially using the example of the Berlin 1936 and Paris 2024 Olympics, in light of Pierce and Benveniste's semiotic theory. Therefore, it is observed that States seek to promote their ideologies with the help of national symbols and the media with the purpose of legitimizing themselves through coercive means - foreseen in Joseph Nye's Soft Power. However, this action goes against the Olympic movement. To prove this, we identify how these States seek to promote their national interests according to the triad between sign, object and interpretant. We verified that this promotion does not align with the international Olympic movement, by evaluating the reasons that lead States to behave this way and identifying the principles and norms of the International Olympic Committee that govern the holding of the Olympics.
