Abstract

The research internship abroad, aimed at continuing and deepening the doctoral research conducted at FAU-USP linked to the Young Researcher Project "Barroco-açu: Portuguese America in the Artistic Geography of the Global South" (process nº 2015-23222-4), aims to explore and map the dynamics of the formation of an artistic geography between the territories of the Rio de la Plata Basin and São Paulo during the colonial period. The objective is to gather documentation and access studies that address the transatlantic connections stemming from Iberian expansion in the Americas, as well as to examine material and visual cultural objects resulting from the social, commercial, and cultural interactions between Europe and the Americas. Based on this data, the networks of artistic connections and exchanges between the Spanish and Portuguese domains in the regions of Upper Peru, Río de la Plata, São Paulo plateau, and the coastal areas between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro will be analyzed, with a particular emphasis on the interactions between São Paulo and Rio de la Plata. By adopting a transdisciplinary approach, this study will investigate how these exchanges shaped the region's artistic geography, its artistic manifestations, techniques, and materials. The aim is to contribute to a mapping of the artistic relationships between these regions, seeking to renew historiographical approaches to colonial art and architecture. The research internship at Stony Brook University is essential due to its dynamic academic environment and specialized resources. The proximity to New York will provide access to renowned institutions in Latin American studies and art history, expanding the possibilities for collaboration and enriching the research.
