Abstract

Background: Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic events refer to situations in which there is a temporary decrease in oxygen supply (hypoxia) and reduced blood flow (ischemia) to the newborn's brain. These events can occur during labor, birth with some encephalopathy, during neonatal surgeries - mainly those involving cardiopulmonary bypass - or some event during the perinatal period and can lead to significant brain damage. The use of neuroprotective drugs in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic events is an area of ¿¿medical research and practice that aims to protect the newborn's brain against the damage caused by these events. The goal is to minimize brain damage and improve long-term neurological outcomes. Objective: To analyze the efficacy of the neuroprotective action of allopurinol in hypoxic-ischemic events in neonatal babies and compare it with drugs that are regularly used in these situations. Method: Studies will be identified through searches in the electronic databases PubMed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane and Virtual Health Library (BVS). Randomized clinical trials that evaluate the neuroprotective effect of allopurinol in hypoxic-ischemic events will be analyzed and selected. The outcomes evaluated are: drug efficacy, comparison with related traditional drugs and side effects. Final Considerations: The Project can be considered highly relevant to the scientific, clinical and innovation community, since the project addresses a pertinent and promising topic on several fronts. Allopurinol is an easily accessible drug and traditionally used in clinical medicine. The area of ¿¿knowledge that addresses neonates is of utmost importance in Brazil and is under development and improvement; more so than some other areas of medicine. Finally, the complexity and importance of pediatric neurology serves to consecrate the power of impact that the project intends to have in social and health terms at a national level. Finally, the project promises to responsibly gather and evaluate data from recent and diverse literature. This will make it possible to improve paths towards a more structured medicine that is free from utopia; aiming at applicability and viability - as well as efficiency - for the Brazilian reality and possibly other countries.
