Abstract

The present study reviews the paradigms, analysis, and dominant narrative in the bibliography about housing projects funded by Banco Nacional da Habitação (BNH) during the Brazilian Military Regime (1964-1986). In the 1970s and 1980s, a limited narrative emerged, heavily influenced by reaction to the conservative and authoritarian orientation of the military regime, obscuring potential interpretations. As a result, researchers developed a critical review of this production, highlighting its shortcomings while overlooking its achievements, as if only the damage that, unquestionably, would have been caused to Brazilian cities. To revisit dated references, this investigation aims to qualitatively analyze critical studies of BNH's action. This involves conducting a bibliographical survey, organizing a database, and scrutinizing the principal authors on this subject. In light of a new context of understanding housing policy, 60 years later, this study seeks to enhance the precision of analysis of housing policy established by BNH. It intends to deconstruct beliefs and formulate a fresh perspective on the topic. This undergraduate research project is part of Research Line "Pioneiros da Habitação Social (Fase 2)", coordinated by its advisor, Nabil Bonduki. After conducting in-depth research on the incipient public housing policy prior to the military regime, the project now transitions to the second stage, focusing on the post-1964 period, particularly the BNH.
