Abstract

Introduction: Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) are common urological manifestations among men and are responsible for negatively impacting the quality of life and physical, psychological, emotional and social conditions of those affected. Nursing plays an important role in providing qualified care to people with LUTS by assessing the intensity of these symptoms, recognizing and intervening in the factors responsible for intensifying them, and developing and implementing interventions aimed at controlling symptoms. Objectives: This study aims to identify the specificities of lower urinary tract symptoms among people with prostate conditions treated at an outpatient clinic. The specific objectives are to identify the prevalence and intensity of lower urinary tract symptoms among people with prostate conditions treated at an outpatient clinic, and to identify the factors associated with lower urinary tract symptoms presented by people with prostate conditions treated at an outpatient clinic. Method: This is a cross-sectional study with quantitative analysis. The study will be conducted at a university hospital affiliated with a public higher education institution in a city in the interior of the state of São Paulo. Men aged 18 years or older, with or without suspected or undergoing treatment for prostate cancer or other prostate pathologies, will be eligible to participate in the study. Study participants will be interviewed to collect sociodemographic and clinical information. Two instruments will be used: the Participant Characterization Form and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). The project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee and obtained approval under opinion No. 6,244,675 and CAAE: 67528623.2.0000.5504. Data will be analyzed according to the nature of the variables; therefore, quantitative variables (continuous and discrete) will be described by measures of central tendency (mean) and dispersion (standard deviation), while qualitative variables (categorical) will be described by their absolute values ¿¿and percentages. The distribution of dependent variables will be analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test to determine whether parametric or non-parametric statistics will be used. Exploratory analyses will be performed to investigate the influence of sociodemographic and clinical variables on the intensity of prostate symptoms, and specific statistical tests will be used for the types of variables studied. Expected results: discovery of factors associated with urinary symptoms and the pattern of symptoms presented by participants in the context of the study, thus strengthening the development of the Nursing Process for people with LUTS.
