Abstract

Violence against LGBT+ people is a global problem, and since universities are part of society, this form of violence also manifests itself within it. Recent studies indicate the effectiveness of actions aimed at preventing LGBTphobia in universities, highlighting the role of university management, the application of training on sexual and gender diversity, and friendships and support networks as factors in preventing and overcoming such violence. Based on research already carried out at a Brazilian university, located in the interior of São Paulo, this research project aims to understand how this last action - friendships and support networks - which is still little explored in the literature, can act as a factor in preventing violence against LGBT+ people in universities, and what actions these educational institutions can promote for prevention. Data will be collected through an online questionnaire, communicative accounts of daily life and communicative discussion groups. Based on the dialogue with the participants, the exclusionary and transformative dimensions that help or not in preventing and overcoming this phenomenon will be analyzed. It is hoped to prove whether actions centered on the preventive role of friendships and support networks made up of LGBT+ and cisheterosexual people, which have been pointed out as effective in the international literature, can also have a transformative impact in relation to violence based on sexual and gender diversity in the Brazilian case, as well as indicating suggestions for practices that prevent and overcome LGBTphobia in higher education.
