Abstract

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic immune-mediated enteropathy against gluten, but it is also considered a systemic disorder with diverse manifestations. The immune response mainly affects the mucosa of the small intestine, causing an increase in the number of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia. osinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory immunological disease characterized by the infiltration of eosinophils in the esophageal mucosa and can result in a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms, such as dysphagia, heartburn and food impaction. The association between EoE and CD is still controversial and its prevalence is highly variable. These diseases are triggered by abnormal immune responses to ingested antigens and share some similarities; however, the lack of a common genetic basis and the differences in pathophysiological mechanisms argue against a possible association. Therefore, there is no consensus regarding the possibility of a shared mechanism or the alternative that the coexistence is coincidental. Thus, this retrospective, descriptive study aims to investigate the coexistence of these diseases at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo (HCFMRP-USP), based on clinical, endoscopic and histopathological data, in order to establish a causal relationship and/or association between the pathologies. The results intend to help produce knowledge about the link between EoE and CD and contribute to further research based on the conclusion of the hypotheses of this research.
