Abstract

This project aims to develop a critical analysis of the concept of the nation-state in Thomas Piketty's Capital and Ideology (2020), through the investigation of works by Gurminder K. Bhambra. In other words, it seeks to understand how Bhambra critiques the notion of the nation-state as employed by Piketty when he describes the structuring of inequality and its ideological legitimation in modern societies. This work intends to expand upon the analysis proposed in the initial undergraduate research project, of which the present project is a part, titled Inequality, Ideology, and Colonialism in Thomas Piketty's Capital and Ideology, that seeks to answer the following question: "What are the relations between social inequality, ideology, and colonialism in Thomas Piketty's Capital and Ideology (2020)?" In this sense, the opportunity of developing an analysis of the concept of the nation-state as utilized by Piketty, drawing on the works of Gurminder K. Bhambra, offers a critical perspective on Piketty's work, thereby enriching the ongoing research.
