Prevalence of Dominant Personality Traits According to ICD-11 in Brazilian University Students

Abstract

The new edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) has implemented a dimensional classification for Personality Disorders (PD). In this new model, the initial process occurs in two stages to diagnose the personality disorder by analyzing: 1) whether the individual's difficulties meet the threshold for the disorder, and 2) if so, how severe they are, meaning the condition must be assessed as mild, moderate, or severe. Additionally, it includes specifiers for dominant traits: negative affectivity, detachment, dissociality, disinhibition, and anankastia. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the frequency of personality traits according to the Five-Factor Personality Inventory model as aligned with ICD-11, within a sample of Brazilian university students. The estimated sample size includes 250 university students aged 18 or older from various regions of Brazil, participating in a survey-based study. The inclusion criteria are: being 18 years of age or older, enrolled in an undergraduate program at any Brazilian higher education institution, agreeing with the terms of this research, and reading and agreeing to the Online Free and Informed Consent Form. Exclusion criteria: individuals under 18 years of age and non-university students. The instruments to be used include a Sociodemographic Data Questionnaire, developed for this study to characterize the sample by gathering sociodemographic information (age, gender, income, ethnicity, marital status, undergraduate program, etc.), and the Five-Factor Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (FFiCD), a self-report questionnaire with 121 items rated on a five-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). This study aims to generate data on personality traits based on the Five-Factor Model (FFM) applied to ICD-11 within a sample of the Brazilian population, contributing to the body of research on the use of the FFiCD.
