Abstract

Variations of the Earth's magnetic field (EMF) of internal origin are essential for understanding the mechanisms of field generation, the so-called geodynamo. These variations occur on different scales of time and space, from years to billions of years. In South America, the variations are strongly influenced by the presence of the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly (SAA), which is the main EMF anomaly. SAA is characterized by lower field strengths for bands of the same latitude. Its origin and evolution, however, are still poorly known, essentially due to the scarcity of geomagnetic data in the southern hemisphere. The main objective of this project is to understand the evolution of the geomagnetic field for the historical period in Brazil, based on the acquisition and analysis of new archeointensity data on targets of the São Paulo State. Intensity data will be incorporated into the global database to understand the secular-scale oscillations of the geomagnetic field, especially to define the main term of the field models (the dipole field coefficient - g10). The analysis of the new data with those available in the literature will be essential for understanding the variations of the geomagnetic field in Brazil for the historical period.
