Effects of Omega-3 on Salivary Redox State Biomarkers in Patients with Secondary Endodontic Lesions

Abstract

This clinical study aims to investigate the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA ¿-3) supplementation on the salivary redox state of patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis who previously underwent unsuccessful endodontic treatments and are indicated for periapical surgery. The objective is to assess whether PUFA ¿-3 can modulate redox biomarkers, expanding scientific knowledge about the antioxidant impact of omega-3 on oral and systemic health. Participants will be divided into two groups: control (healthy patients) and test (patients with apical periodontitis), both supplemented with 900 mg of omega-3 daily for 40 days. Biochemical salivary parameters will be analyzed, including total proteins, oxidative damage markers (TBARS, carbonylated proteins), and antioxidant defenses (enzymatic: SOD, CAT; and non-enzymatic: FRAP). Samples will be collected before and after the supplementation period to allow intraindividual comparisons. The study follows CONSORT and SPIRIT guidelines, ensuring methodological rigor and result validity.The null hypothesis is that PUFA ¿-3 will not alter redox biomarkers. Confirmation of alternative scenarios may significantly contribute to clinical practice, offering new approaches for managing inflammatory oral and systemic conditions.
