Abstract

This proposal is linked to the research project Transatlantic musical connections: São Paulo in the history of foreign musical theater companies (1914-1934). Its aim is to retrace the history of the Italian Union of Operetta Artists, with which several operetta companies that toured São Paulo in the 1920s was associated. From research into primary and bibliographic sources, we hope to understand the place occupied by the South American theater market in general, and the São Paulo market in particular, in the development and internationalization of an Italian operetta industry, in its relations both with the workers and their representatives and with the Italian State, considering the central role occupied by the unions in Mussolini's fascist government (1922-1943).
