Influence of resveratrol on inflammation of apical periodontitis in rats

Abstract

Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease that, in addition to causing local bone resorption, can trigger systemic repercussions due to the release of inflammatory mediators. Resveratrol, a polyphenol with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, may be promising in controlling inflammatory processes. In this context, this project aims to analyze and compare the influence of resveratrol on the inflammation of apical periodontitis in rats. A total of 32 three-month-old Wistar rats will be used. These animals will be divided into 4 groups: control (C), apical periodontitis (AP), resveratrol (R), and apical periodontitis with resveratrol (AP+R). The experimental protocol will last 45 days. On day 1, daily supplementation with resveratrol (10 mg/kg) via gavage will begin and continue throughout the experimental protocol. Throughout the protocol, the animals' body weight will be monitored to determine the daily dose. On day 15, a coronal opening will be made in the lower left first molar, and pulp exposure will be maintained for 30 days to allow the development of the periapical lesion. On day 45, the animals will be euthanized by exsanguination and jaw removal. The left mandible will be used for histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis (IL-1¿, IL-10, and TNF-¿).
