Abstract

The proposed overseas internship (BEPE) at Beijing Normal University aims to access primary sources of research, as well as foster cultural and methodological exchanges for the ongoing research on NánDàn (¿¿) characters through the lens of Farewell My Concubine and M. Butterfly. The intended research period abroad will not only provide the opportunity to attend performances of Peking Opera in China but also allow for in-person dialogue with artists, directors, and audiences of the plays. Additionally, it will enable the observation of materials used in these performances, such as scripts, costumes, makeup, and sets in Beijing. This research seeks to offer a comprehensive understanding of the artistic and sociocultural implications of NánDàn representations and performances, and shed light on the distinct approaches used by creators in exploring these characters, as well as their relationships with 20th and 21st-century Chinese society and politics.
