Abstract

This research internship abroad is part of the PhD program in Art History, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Cássio S. Fernandes, affiliated with the Federal University of São Paulo (PPGHA-UNIFESP), and will be carried out in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Guillermo Wilde, affiliated with the National University of San Martín (ICSOH - UNSAM).Inspired by Aby Warburg's "scientific-cultural method," the study investigates five religious iconographic themes: Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Rose of Lima, and three representations of the Virgin Mary (Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Cerro, and Our Lady of Caacupé). These themes are embodied in five specific artworks, analyzed as "images of cosmic-spiritual orientation." Originating from ancient, medieval, and modern traditions from the East and experienced across Europe from North to South, they also contributed to the artistic and stylistic formation of celestial bodies, gods, and saints in the Americas, where they merged with indigenous Pathosformeln. The research seeks to trace the iconographic and rhetorical influences of these specific works, produced between the 16th and 18th centuries, to understand the dynamics and exchanges of expressive values between Latin America and Europe, highlighting symbolic flows and regional adaptations. This internship, preceded by an initial phase in Spain, will deepen the study of the cultural dynamics that shaped the reception of religious images in the context of the Río de la Plata region, as well as their transatlantic connections.
