Abstract

Following the broader project in which this research is embedded, Process Number 2023/08413-4, titled "Unbearable Conditions: Bureaucratic Imperatives, Spaces, Subjects, and Relationships in Southern Africa," the present research proposal aims to examine the dynamics of racial and gender relations in South Africa in multiracial families that have undergone interracial adoption processes in the post-apartheid era. Using an ethnographic approach and life history narratives, I seek to understand the moral meanings mobilized within these new family configurations. I am interested in investigating how these families navigate their daily lives within the South African context of a new humanist moral grammar, which coexists with the persistence and renewal of tensions, inequalities, and moral logics from the apartheid era.
