Abstract

The most common natural disasters caused by extreme events in Brazil, such as floods, landslides, heat waves and drought impacts, are caused by extreme events, heavy rainfall and lack of rainfall. In urban environments, where most of Brazil's population is concentrated, floods and landslides are the events that cause the highest number of deaths, along with floods. These disasters also cause water, energy, food, social and health insecurity. In addition, heatwaves are becoming more frequent in Brazil and are the climatic extremes that cause the highest number of deaths on the planet. Therefore, the development of basic research into the occurrence of extreme events in Brazil is of great importance. It is necessary to know and understand the main factors related to meteorological and climatic phenomena, as well as the extreme hydrological and geological conditions that lead to the occurrence of natural disasters, be they floods, landslides or the impact of heatwaves and droughts.
