Abstract

The study of canine tumors has gained a lot of attention recently as it is an excellent model for studying human cancer, in addition to sharing the same environmental exposures and developing different neoplasms types spontaneously. Cancer is considered a disease of the genome, but recent studies have shown large microbial contributions in certain cancer types. Bacteria found in the intestine and their host usually have a symbiotic relationship, even serving as protection against pathogens, however some species normally found can break the intestinal mucosal barrier and become pathogenic to their hosts. The main causes that link carcinogenesis with the microbiota are immunological changes, which disrupt cancer immunosurveillance, in addition to generating metabolic changes, with toxic metabolites circulating through immunosuppressive and pro-inflammatory pathways. Immunity can be affected by several factors such as age, diet, environment, and its association with the intestinal microbiota and the activity of lymphoid tissues has stimulated research into microbial modulation as a great ally in therapeutic modality.
