Abstract

This project aims to analyze the functional motivations that govern the use of the pair não só... mas também (not only¿ but also) in spoken Portuguese based on the Functional Discouse Grammar model (Hengeveld & Mackenzie, 2008). From the point of view of traditional grammar, not only... but it is also considered an 'emphatic expression' of additive coordination (Bechara, 1999; Cunha and Cintra, 2017). Descriptive studies with a functionalist basis (Bagno, 2010; Neves, 2011, Rosário, 2009, 2018, 2024; Rodrigues, 2014; Gonçalves-Segundo and Módulo, 1999, 2016), however, when look at the rigid dichotomy of coordination versus subordination, they conceive this pair in the role of correlation additive, a process distinct from coordination. According to these studies, not only... but also it is also characterized by the mandatory presence of two connective terms, that is, it presents syntactic interdependence, as postulated in the pioneering work of Oiticica (1952). This author also argues that there is, in this case, semantic dependence, since the first element must necessarily follow the second. According to Oiticica (1952) and Pauliukonis (2001), the first element is responsible for the restriction, and the second, in turn, for the inclusion of information. As can be seen, the use of this pair presents important pragmatic, semantic and morphosyntactic aspects to be investigated, which will be done through the framework of Functional Discourse Grammar. It is necessary to verify how the model explains the emphasis postulated by traditional grammar and how it explains the semantic and morphosyntactic interdependence of the pair não só... mas também (not only... but also).
