Abstract

This project aims to investigate the institutional reconfigurations of the Brazilian State, religious organizations and civil associations in light of the incorporation of the principles and implementation of policies related to pluralism established as an intrinsic value of democracy by the 1988 Constitution. The main focus of the proposal is the tensions that have accompanied the current visibility of religious pluralism in Brazil in the decades following the change in the Constitution, and the way in which it puts pressure on secularism and religious equality, as well as other forms of difference, such as racial, ethnic and gender differences. Aware of the reality of this phenomenon also at the global level, our analysis will be developed on at least three levels: the examination of the way in which pluralism, understood as a positive normative value of citizenship, is incorporated into the State's agenda; the study of disputes and reactions to pluralism at the level of civil organizations; the description of pluralism as an experience of religious, racial, ethnic and gender diversity in everyday life.
