Abstract

Flexible plastic packaging made from polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) is widely used in the food sector due to its composition of conventional polymers and ease of recycling, especially when manufactured as mono-materials. This usage aligns with a growing global trend towards the adoption of mono-material packaging. Simultaneously, new food processing technologies are emerging, gaining prominence in scientific and industrial fields for enhancing quality, safety, and reducing food waste. In this context, pulsed light (LP) technology stands out as an innovative solution for the microbiological decontamination of packaged foods. This project aims to investigate the impact of LP processing on mono-material PE and PP packaging, focusing on analyzing changes in structure, morphology, properties, and the potential for substance migration to food simulants. A detailed assessment will be conducted on the materials before and after LP treatment. This initiative is expected to bring significant scientific and technological advancements, promoting the enhanced use of LP and expanding knowledge on packaging, solidifying its position as a promising technology in the sector.
