Abstract

Living in favelas represents the only viable housing option for a significant portion of Brazil's population. The relevance of this issue and the numerous knowledge gaps regarding these territories have driven the development of methodologies based on geospatial data analysis, aimed at improving information about the location and scale of these settlements to inform public policies. Contributing to this discussion, this project operates on the premise that advancing these methodologies fundamentally requires recognizing the diversity and heterogeneity of Brazilian favelas. This involves understanding the various dimensions of precariousness and their multiple spatial manifestations. The proposal aims to develop a multidimensional analytical framework to deepen and expand knowledge about the diversity of favelas in the country. This includes building indicators and developing a classification model based on typologies. Additionally, the research seeks to foster critical reflection on the potential and limitations of new data, methods, and techniques in contexts of pronounced socio-spatial diversity, thereby contributing to national and international debates on the subject.
