Abstract This study aims to: 1. Synthesize varnishes containing dipotassium oxalate particles associated or not with fluoride or fluoride plus stannous. 2. Evaluate the efficacy of these experimental varnishes in preventing erosive tooth wear. The experimental varnishes will be formulated and the amounts of fluoride release in neutral (artificial saliva) and acid (citric acid) mediums will be determined. For comparison, a commercial fluoride varnish and placebo varnish will be used. A group without treatments will be also included. Then, the ability of the materials to reduce enamel and dentin surface loss will be determined after an erosive-abrasive cycle. The experimental units will consist of 70 enamel and 70 dentin specimens (n=10 for each substrate). The solutions will be tested using a 5-day erosion-abrasion model, consisting of 5 min of immersion in 0.3% citric acid solution, followed by 60 min of exposure to artificial saliva, 4 times a day. Brushing will be performed twice a day (15 s), 30 min after the first and fourth erosive challenges, in a brushing machine, with soft brushes and a suspension of standard toothpaste and artificial saliva, in a ratio of 1:3. At the end, the surface loss of the specimens will be analyzed using an optical profilometry. The data obtained will be analyzed with the appropriate statistical tests. | |
