Abstract

This project aims to discuss the analytical process of elaborating universal demonstrations in the Posterior Analytics. To this end, we will develop the distinction between particular demonstration and universal demonstration in Aristotle's theory of scientific demonstration. With this in mind, we aim to investigate the influence of ancient geometry and the methodology of mathematical sciences on Aristotelian theory and their role in the development of this distinction. Through a bibliographic review of specialized literature and, through works on the history of mathematics as secondary sources, we will seek to understand and analyze the interpretations previously established about this relationship. Therefore, we hypothesize that the process of formulating explanantia and the identification of universal demonstrations are closely related to the method of analysis. Therefore, this project aims to enrich the debate on the history of ancient philosophy through a bibliographic review that, with some exceptions, did not give due attention to the distinction between the method of synthesis and the method of analysis.
