Abstract

X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) has become established as an essential tool in laboratory research in dentistry, particularly in the fields of periodontics and implantology. However, heterogeneity in experimental protocols and the frequent omission of technical parameters intrinsic to the operation of this technology may compromise the reproducibility and comparability of studies. In this context, the present project proposes a literature review aimed at identifying, characterizing, and critically analyzing the application of micro-CT in experimental dental investigations involving in vivo or ex vivo specimens. The search will be conducted in the PubMed database using a comprehensive search strategy and covering the period from 2005 to 2025. Information will be extracted regarding the types of scanned specimens, acquisition parameters (such as tube voltage and current, exposure time, and the use of filters), and reconstruction parameters (including software and artifact correction strategies). The data will be organized in a digital spreadsheet and subjected to descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including correlations, proportion tests, and similarity-based clustering. Thus, the study aims to identify trends, gaps, and inconsistencies in methodological reporting, which may support the development of guidelines to promote greater standardization and scientific rigor in the use of micro-CT in experimental dental research. The findings of the study aim to contribute to the improvement of methodological quality and transparency in scientific communication, reinforcing the reliability of data generated by this high-resolution imaging technology.
