Abstract

The J-PAS survey will detect $\sim 10^4$ galaxies/deg$^2$ to produce a high-density 3D map of the Universe up to $z\sim 1$, employing an innovative approach with 56 narrow optical bands and the broad $i$ band.Observations finally started in 2023, and as of November/2024 we already have approximately 100 deg$^2$ imaged in all filters. The J-PAS Early Data Release is planned for November 22nd, 2024, with approximately 14 deg$^2$.The speed of the survey is building up and in mid-2025 we should be approaching a steady state where hundreds of deg$^2$/year will enter the data set.The goal of this project is to make the first studies of large-scale structure with J-PAS galaxies and quasars. The student will select a sample of extragalactic objects starting with the provided star-galaxy-quasar classification, photometric redshifts, depths in each filter, FWHM, as well as any photometry variables that may be relevant to estimate the expected number of galaxies in each field. He will then compute the 2-pt correlation function and the Fourier power spectrum for the different galaxy selections, estimating their bias and making a first assessment of possible sources of systematic errors. He will also employ the DESI Early Data Release, which partially overlap the J-PAS Early Data Release, in order to produce sub-sets of the data with confirmed spectral types and redshifts, which can then be used to measure the impact of the photometric classification and photometric redshifts.
