Abstract

The research aims to develop sustainable photoinitiator systems for photopolymerization reactions, aligning with the principles of green chemistry. The focus is on synthesizing Fe(II)-based photoinitiators, selected for their low toxicity, abundance, biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness. These compounds, coordinated with phenanthroline-derived ligands, will be applied in processes such as Free Radical Polymerization (FRP) and epoxidation (cationic photopolymerization). To enhance the eco-friendliness of these reactions, the project proposes replacing bisphenol A (BPA)-derived materials with renewable sources, such as vegetable oils, while also conducting reactions under more sustainable conditions-solvent-free and at low temperatures. The methodology includes the synthesis and characterization of ligands and metal complexes, as well as the investigation of their photochemical and photoelectrochemical properties. The efficiency of the photoinitiator systems will be assessed through LED-irradiated photopolymerization reactions, with kinetic monitoring using techniques such as UV-Vis, GPC, and FTIR. By advancing more efficient and sustainable processes, this initiative contributes to the development of new polymeric materials and fosters a more environmentally responsible production cycle.
