Abstract

Bemisia tabaci is a significant global agricultural pest, primarily due to its role as a vector for plant viruses. The use of conventional insecticides is the primary strategy for managing whitefly infestations, however, their use results in environmental contamination, poses risks to beneficial insects, and contributes to the development of pest resistance. One alternative that has been studied and is considered promising for the control of pests, insects vector, and phytopathogens is the use of RNA interference (RNAi) mechanisms. RNAi offers a sustainable and innovative solution for pest and pathogen control, aligning with the principles of modern agriculture that emphasize environmental protection. The primary objective of this project is to develop a dsRNA-based system to induce RNAi for the control of B. tabaci MEAM1 in tomato plants. The outcomes of this research will provide critical insights into the development of a novel, sustainable tool for managing this major pest, thereby contributing to the sustainability of Brazilian agriculture.
