Abstract

In this project, we focus on understanding the theoretical challenges to achieving circular Rydberg states of trapped ions, which have extended lifetimes due to the limited decay channels to neighboring Rydberg states. A successful protocol would translate into times for coherent operations orders of magnitude longer than the currently achievable with low-angular momentum counterparts. The consequence of this would be the commensurate time scales for manipulation of internal and motional degrees of freedom without fast, detrimental decoherence effects. (AU)
