Abstract

Humans and animals have had an interrelationship since the dawn of civilization. However, this relationship has not always been positive and can be harmful to animals, as in the case of mistreatment. Veterinarians are usually the first to become aware of a situation of mistreatment, especially during clinical consultations, since they have sufficient knowledge to identify possible signs and indications of abuse and thus report the situation to the responsible authorities. The analysis of the case series of animal mistreatment in a given population and region provides a profile of the scenario where such abuse occurs. Through this type of study, important information is obtained, such as information related to the types of mistreatment, the profile of the aggressor and the animal. This data can define factors or situations that predispose to the occurrence of cases of mistreatment or even help in the identification of suspected cases. Knowledge of the profile of cases related to mistreatment is also a sentinel of domestic violence and child abuse, since animal abuse generally precedes violence against humans. Currently in Brazil, there are few studies that outline a profile of the conditions of animal abuse, in the region of the city of Araçatuba-SP, there are no works or data related to cases of animal abuse. The present project aims to carry out a retrospective study of cases of animal abuse, during the years 2017 to 2024 in the region of the city of Araçatuba-SP, in order to outline a profile that helps in the identification and prevention of cases of abuse in animals and humans.
