Abstract

Deleuze wrote two works in which he primarily addresses the cinematic image: Cinema 1 - The Movement-Image and Cinema 2 - The Time-Image. In these texts, he proposes the foundation of an ontology of the cinematic image - which he initially calls the movement-image - followed by a categorization of this image into different modes in which it has been historically employed. One of these modes is the action-image, which established a more independent relationship between movement-images and was widely used in Hollywood cinema. This project aims to explore the political dimension that Deleuze attributes particularly to burlesque films, with emphasis on the works of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, who are prominent expressions of the action-image. Furthermore, the project intends to analyze other references to the genre in the two aforementioned books, in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of Deleuze's treatment of the theme and to assess the applicability of the described political dimension to other burlesque films mentioned.
