Abstract

The process of urbanization and the consequent channelization of rivers lead to increased flood hazards. These floods cause many social, environmental, and economic losses, which tend to intensify due to climate change. Hydrological modeling for flood forecasting is a widely used tool for flood risk management. However, complex models are not suitable for the prediction of flash floods in urban areas due to their high computational processing time and the need for short latency of flood forecast horizon that is related to short concentration times of these catchments. In this context, the present project aims to evaluate the feasibility of using the HYMOD model for real-time flood nowcasting in the Monjolinho watershed, located in São Carlos, SP, which frequently experiences flash floods.
