Abstract

Building a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive ocean science is essential to addressing the complex challenges that affect the ocean and coastal communities. Inspiring girls and women to engage in ocean science requires visibility, representation, and recognition of the paths of those who already contribute with knowledge, education, and innovation. The Marta Vannucci Award for Women in Ocean Science is a pioneering initiative that honors and celebrates these trajectories in Brazil. This proposal aligns with the spirit of the award and with the project Ressoa Oceano: Collaborative Communication Network for the Promotion of Ocean Literacy, a science communication initiative dedicated to strengthening ocean culture in Brazil. By sharing the stories, legacies, and achievements of women who have been nominated for the award, the proposal expands its impact and contributes to a more accessible, engaged, and socially connected science. Aligned with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender Equality) and 14 (Life Below Water), the proposal reinforces the strategic role of science communication in promoting a more diverse and inclusive ocean culture.
