Abstract

The aim of this project is to deepen a systematic conceptual understanding of André Bazin's critical work, engaging dialogue with authors who have explored it through philosophy, such as Gilles Deleuze and Stanley Cavell. The research builds upon previous studies I have conducted in film theory, grounded in the notion of the camera-image as a machinic-technological process of individuation. In this sense, what I refer to as the mode of individuation in camera-images proceeds through automatic reflection, consolidating diffuse figural sets that are originally relations of forces and drives. Series are established as modes of existence, including the "cosmic" modality, which, in Bazin's case, is imbued by animism and awe at the expressive new camera-forms of plant life, or the intensities depicted in the absolute alterity of animal life. The development of this concept of camera-image will occur in close dialogue with Bazin (in relation to the demand for phenomenological withdrawal), with Deleuze (in the plane of consistency anchoring the crystal-image), and Cavell (in his attempt to root skepticism in pragmatism). The comparative analysis constitutes the main focus of the proposed research.
