Abstract

The field of Medicine and Health is a vital scientific domain for societal development and the advancement of humanity. The recent global pandemic has underscored the critical need for new methods and techniques in diagnosis and therapy that enable rapid and effective solutions to health challenges. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in Medicine and Health holds the potential to enhance, accelerate, and automate the diagnosis and treatment of some of the most prevalent diseases affecting humanity. In this regard, such innovation will enable a scientific and technological leap that could benefit thousands of individuals and patients.Objectives:1. Conduct basic and applied problem-oriented research aimed at generating wealth for Brazil and contributing to the protection of rights and quality of life for Brazilians;2. Develop projects in partnership with governmental and non-governmental organizations;3. Create startups or spin-offs that incorporate research outcomes developed by the Center into their products or services;4. Significantly contribute to the training of qualified professionals at technical, technologist, undergraduate, and graduate levels (lato and/or stricto sensu) in the field of Artificial Intelligence applied to the thematic areas of Medicine and Health;5. Focus on advanced scientific and technological research, serving as the central axis for the research activities to be developed, specifically in the field of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Health. This project aims to establish a Science for Development Center (SDC) focused on research into integrated health information systems, including large databases (big data), artificial intelligence, predictive models, and advanced therapies for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of chronic diseases in the Health sector. The project is a joint initiative involving the University of São Paulo's School of Medicine (FMUSP), the Clinical Hospital of FMUSP (HC), the Radiology Institute of HC (InRad), and the Polytechnic School of Engineering at USP (POLI).This partnership seeks to implement platforms, develop methods, and create new algorithms to support diagnosis, therapy, and health management. HCFMUSP serves approximately 1.5 million patients annually and is the largest medical complex in South America. It is affiliated with the São Paulo State Department of Health, which is responsible for a population of 44 million people for healthcare services, and with FMUSP for educational and research purposes.FMUSP has 1,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students. Its stricto sensu graduate programs include 27 academic, professional master's, and doctoral programs aimed at training researchers and higher education faculty. It has approximately 500 accredited advisors and plays a key role in Brazil's scientific output, with publications in high-impact national and international journals. The Polytechnic School of Engineering at USP has a comparable number of undergraduate and graduate students to the School of Medicine. Undergraduate and graduate courses are planned at both schools under USP. This platform has the potential to be deployed in units of the SUS (Unified Health System). Initially, it is intended to be offered to the São Paulo State Department of Health (SES-SP) and subsequently to all federal units. (AU)
