Abstract

Blockchain technology consists of a distributed database on a network that stores its data in blocks. Network users must reach consensus on the validity of new data through predefined protocols and business rules, ensuring that it can be included and maintaining integrity. However, challenges arise in using the technology due to performance issues related to the energy and computational costs required by consensus algorithms. This project is comprised of analysing the individual and combined efficiency of blockchain technology consensus algorithms using a real application as a test environment. In particular, we want to develop a systematic and empirical analysis between the Proof of Work (PoW), Proof of Stake (PoS), Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) algorithms and their respective variations, to find the best choice of algorithm, or combination, for the supply chain context present in the research test environment, analyzing efficiency and guiding the development of future systems of the same type.
