Abstract

By postulating the existence of four radically independent "generic procedures," which serve as conditions for philosophy (art, politics, science, and love), Alain Badiou advances a theory of the autonomy of art. This research project investigates the formulation of this theory of autonomy, how it is sustained, and what mode of relationship it ultimately establishes between art, the other three procedures, and philosophy. In other words, the central objective of this research is to elaborate and understand the specific nature of this simultaneous autonomy and correlation between art, politics, science, love, and philosophy, based on Badiou's work. The research also moves beyond philosophical elaboration, seeking to situate it in dialogue with the tradition of literary studies, confronting this theory of autonomy with other formulations on the subject, thus addressing issues related to the work of interpretation and criticism, primarily within the Marxist tradition, as well as in contemporary discussions concerning post-autonomy. The BEPE internship at the University of Paris Cité is justified by the need to access bibliographic material unavailable in Brazil, and by the possibility of expanding theoretical frameworks, broadening interlocutions, and immersing in the intellectual environment where Badiou produced and continues to produce his work.
