Abstract The research project "METALS ADSORBED TO MICROPLASTICS ON BEACHES OF THE PARANÁ COASTLINE" examines the interaction between microplastics (plastic particles <5 mm) and heavy metals in coastal ecosystems, with particular focus on beaches along Paraná's coastline. The study aims to characterize the chemical composition of microplastics and quantify metals adsorbed on their surfaces through a comprehensive methodological approach involving seasonal sediment sampling at two key locations - Ilha do Superagui and Pontal do Sul. Collected samples undergo laboratory processing including sieving, microplastic extraction and identification using the hot needle test and FTIR spectroscopy, followed by metal quantification via ICP-OES and ICP-MS techniques capable of detecting trace elements (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Sn, Ti, Zn). Preliminary results have successfully validated the methodology by confirming metal adsorption on collected plastic pellets. Current research phases focus on establishing correlations between various microplastic morphotypes (fragments, fibers, pellets) and their metal adsorption capacities, while also investigating potential seasonal variations in these processes. Beyond its scientific contributions, this project provides critical insights into microplastics as chemical pollution vectors in coastal environments, offering valuable data to inform monitoring strategies and pollution mitigation measures. Research outcomes will be disseminated through scientific publications and public engagement initiatives, underscoring the importance of marine conservation amidst global environmental challenges. | |
