Abstract

Brazil's heavy dependence on imported fertilizers highlights the need for sustainable alternatives. Biofertilizers derived from marine macroalgae, such as Kappaphycus alvarezii, are emerging as a promising solution. This red algae, a source of carrageenan, is already used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, and its commercial cultivation in Brazil has begun in Santa Catarina. Studies indicate positive effects of its extract on crops such as soybeans, corn, and sugarcane, thanks to the presence of nutrients and biostimulant compounds. This project aims to develop standardized biofertilizers from the large-scale cultivation of K. alvarezii, also evaluating its use in the cosmetics industry due to bioactive compounds such as mycosporins. Microorganisms associated with the macroalgae will be investigated, which can influence their metabolism and the quality of the final product. The project also envisages the creation of a germplasm bank to preserve the species' genetic diversity and identify genes of biotechnological interest. By integrating agricultural production, biotechnology and the valorization of marine resources, the proposal contributes to reducing external dependence, strengthening the local economy and promoting environmental sustainability in the Brazilian agro-industrial sector.
