Abstract One of the strategies used by the automotive sector in Brazil, in order to meet global market requirements, is the adoption of modularity in the development of new products. Nevertheless, this adoption is not a common activity, because it involves various company's decisions. Besides, it is still necessary to carry out studies in order to better understand the implications associated to the modular design, and this is a relevant gap in the literature on the theme. In this context, overall the proposal of this research is to carry out an exploratory descriptive research of the modularity use in automakers and car parts companies, identifying to what extent it is adopted and its application aspects; analyzing the relation between its different perspectives (in design; in production or organizational) and analyzing the modularity strategies adopted in these companies.
