Assessment of postural control and the maximum force of respiratory muscles in breast hypertrophy

Abstract

Besides the psychological disorders, mammary hypertrophy brings multiple physical symptoms, especially pain in the shoulders, breasts, cervical and lumbar spine. As the center of mass is ahead due to the size of breasts, a true increase in the recruitment of non-postural muscles to maintain the standing posture which can compromise other body functions, such as the ability to reach and manipulation of the upper limb postural deviation due to the shoulder caused by excessive recruitment of stabilizing proximal upper limb and respiratory function changes by mechanical alignment and mobility of the trunk that progress to change the mechanics of the chest cavity. This study aims to evaluate the effects of breast hypertrophy in postural control. We selected 16 patients with breast hypertrophy and 16 patients not suffering from hypertrophy comprised the control group. The groups were submitted to evaluation by postural dynamic posturography in four conditions: eyes open and fixed platform, eyes closed and fixed platform, eyes open, mobile platform, eyes closed, and mobile platform. Data from the evaluations were tabulated and descriptive analysis was made of them. But these data are also analyzed and compared between groups using appropriate tools according to parametric or nonparametric distribution verified.(AU)
