Abstract

In this research work a theoretical analysis of the application viability of an active control system using a magnetic bearing as non-contact actuator for reducing rotor vibrations as a function of the rotor flexibility will be developed. The analysis will be accomplished regarding the actuator positions respect to the point where the exciting forces are acting onto the rotor. A feedback system to attenuate synchronous and sub-synchronous frequency vibrations will be employed. It is known that the magnetic actuators are limited to the maximum magnetic force which they produce and the electric current (saturation current), and these parameters can be strongly influenced by the rotor flexibility. Therefore, the viability analysis will be based on the performance, electric current and control force needed to be applied by the actuator for reducing the rotor vibration levels in extreme conditions of flexibility and stiffness. The analysis will accomplished using rotor models developed by the impedance matrix method.
