Abstract

This Research Internship Abroad (BEPE) proposal consists mainly on the experimental aspect of the currently doctoral project (grant #2016/13059-1), which is part of the ongoing thematic project (#2015/20363-6) in cooperation with the German institution Technical University of Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt). Rotors are always susceptible to vibrations due to unbalance, and, particularly, shafts supported by hydrodynamic journal-bearings usually present instability due to oil-whip effect. Although there are some active and passive methods to mitigate those problems, the subject is still relevant. In the doctoral project it is proposed to design a controller that not only tackles the described issues, but also is robust to uncertainties. A promising method seems to be the two-stage design via linear matrix inequalities (LMI). Good results were obtained in computational simulations; however an experimental validation is necessary. The goal of this internship is to test and compare the control method at a test rig owned by the Institute of Applied Dynamics of TU Darmstadt. In addition to the experimental part, we aim to share experience and knowledge about different control strategies and magnetic actuators application in rotating systems. (AU)
