Abstract

Professional Guidance is an area of psychology that seeks to understand the factors that interfere in the professional choice of the people. Knowing the motivations that contribute to the choices is difficult and extremely important in that prospect. This study aims to point out some reasons that lead students from two universities - one private and other public - to join the course in psychology. This will apply to participants a questionnaire developed specifically for this study with likert scale format, consisting of 59 alternatives which adress the following dimensions: a) reasons why these students enter the course; b) what were the sources of information about the course; c) what the perception of people in this profession; d) previous contact with health care; e) personality characteristics deemed necessary by professional in psychology; f) influence of the family and others persons; g) perception of the labor market of the profession; h) possible areas of activity; i) expectations about the personal and academic backgrounds. Participants must assign whole values from 1 to 5 as their degree of agreement with each statement. In parallel, will be used a scale of empathy to see whether in psychology students this ability is related to the reasons for selecting the course.
