Abstract

The Psychiatric Reform is technical and political movement which has been evolving since the 50’s in several Occidental countries including Brazil. The movement is trying to transform the standards of assistance given to those who suffer psychically by means of creating new equipment to substitute the mental hospital, and developing inclusion techniques together with the community, thereby, eliminating prolonged and chronic commitments and implementing a psychosocial rehabilitation. During this period some particular and objective experiments exist that can demonstrate and describe this process. The city of Campinas and its network of mental health assistance is a fertile field in relation to these experiments. Parting from this premise a case study will be made of a family of an individual that lived through the experience of being committed to a large psychiatric hospital and went through the deinstitutionalization process and the psychosocial rehabilitation with social and professional inclusion. This is a qualitative research in which the family to be investigated will be chosen by the institution’s team that is following up this process. The team will collect the data of the investigation as well the documental sources referring to the family under study.
