Abstract

The inclusion of family in the treatment of mental disorders patients in Brazil happened through a historical process influenced especially by the emergency of family therapy and the psychiatric reform. Ever since there has been a tension in this field, which produced different discourses about family, considering it, on one hand, as a support social network to those patients and, on the other, as holding the responsibility for the illness and care of their mental disorder patient. In this context, the aim of this study is to understand how relatives of a psychiatric day hospital users signify their participation in the treatment. The participants of this study will be relatives of patients under treatment in the Psychiatric Daily Hospital in the General Hospital, located in Ribeirão Preto, who freely agree to participate after indication by the hospital staff. The data will be collected through individual semi-structured interviews, which will be recorded in audio and then transcribed. The meanings about family, mental disorder and treatment constructed by those relatives will be the central topics of these interviews. Field notes will be taken. The data will be interpreted through qualitative procedures of discourse analysis, based on the contributions of the social constructionist movement. Specifically, the data will be submitted to discursive practices analysis, which will allow the description of the participant's constructed meanings and also the process through which that happened during the interview. It is expected that these understandings will support treatment and intervention propositions that match family's expectations. (AU)
